Best Places, Central
California Coast: from Santa Cruz to Santa Barbara includes
hidden coastal treasures such as a hacienda-inn built by Hearst Castle
architect Julia Morgan, a trail that leads through a log tunnel at
Big Sur, and a lodging in Carmel that looks like home to the Seven

Recent Great
Trip:
Art
lives in the Villages of Northeastern Switzerland!
In one of the least touristed parts of Switzerland, the tiny village
of Stein am Rhein hugs the banks of the Rhine, as it has for hundreds
of years. A short walk up from the river on cobbled streets leads
to the main square, embraced by medieval houses with frescoes depicting
fated lovers, brave soldiers in chain mail, mythical lions, and other
scenes. Sit for a spell in the sun and sip a panache, or beer with
a spike of lemon juice, before hiking up through vineyards to the
fairytale castle that overlooks the town.

Travel Writing Tip:
One of
the biggest problems with writing a travel story is getting
started. Here's a tip: pick out a friend or family member who
understands you best, and write them a email or a etter about
your trip. You will find you are not censoring yourself and
the material you write will be fresh and personal. Afterwards,
be sure to take off the "Dear Tammy" before you send in the
story!

Cool
Travel Web Site:
The best travel Web sites turn up in Judy's weekly syndicated
column, Online and In Print. Here's one:
If
you can travel at the last minute, check out www.site59.com,
recently named the best Last-Minute Deals travel site by Yahoo!
Internet Life magazine. You may search by kind of trip,
(sun, international, luxury) and view offerings that leave
from 33 different departure points. Choose a package that
includes airfare, or one that includes only hotel and land
travel. Be aware that at these super low rates you may not
get the exact room with a view you'd choose, but you can often
upgrade for a price.
